7 needless tips for the perfect eyeliner

 Start with a primer

A primer ensures that your eyeliner does not run or smudge during the day, either due to sweat or to an unexpected rain shower. With primer, you are sure the eyeliner will stay in place all day.

Curl your eyelashes

Do you use an eyelash curler? If so, then curl your eyelashes first and apply the eyeliner only after they have been curled. This sequence prevents smudging.

Only use black on the upper lid

And for the lower lid, choose a dark brown shade. Dark brown is subtler.

Use a tool to help you

If you do not have a steady hand, simple sticky tape can help.

Fill in the eyelash line

Once you get the line right, then you will probably still see a tiny bit of skin gleaming between the eyelash line and the eyeliner. Press the eyelashes upward and carefully fill in the exposed skin. This gives you a super tight line.

Smudge the eyeliner slightly

By very carefully smudging your eyeliner with a thin make-up sponge, you ensure that the space up to the eyelash line is filled even more precisely. Plus, it appears more natural than a hard line. If you also lightly smudge the eyeliner on the upper lid, then you have the basis for the perfect smoky eye.

Do not pull on your eyelid.

It is so tempting—to pull up the corners of the eyelid to obtain a flatter surface for applying the eyeliner. But the fragile skin around your eyes can easily be damaged like this. It can really cause wrinkles.

Nowadays, thanks to permanent make-up techniques, every woman or man can look more beautiful and more attractive, no matter the circumstances. Just a few minutes are enough to redraw the face, to give the eyes a new allure and to make that radiance permanent!

Permanent pigmentation is the injection of vegetable- or mineral-based ink into the uppermost layer of the dermis using an ultra-fine needle. The non-allergenic pigments can be mixed to obtain personalised colours that are matched to the colour of your skin and hair.

 This type of pigmentation is completely different than that used for tattoos (different pigments, different depth of application, different injection technique). It can be applied at any age and is used to:

• Fill in thin eyebrows or gaps in eyebrow growth in a natural manner.
• Rework the contour of the mouth, to make the lips fuller or to enhance their colouration, if their natural colour has faded.
• Make the eyes more intense by reinforcing the pigmentation between the eyelashes.
• mphasise the eyes with a stroke of eyeliner or a slightly blurred kohl effect.

Correct or camouflage certain defects (cleft lip, scars, repair of the areola, correction of poorly executed permanent make-up, application of beauty spots…)

After an anaesthetic cream is applied to the area to be treated, pencil is used to draw the lip contour, the line of the eyebrows or the stroke of eyeliner. This is done to get an idea of the final effect. Once the patient is satisfied, the actual procedure may begin.

The needles used and the pigment packages are sterile, of course, and are only used once. Even the plastic container where the colour is stored is disposed of after each use.

 The procedure lasts approximately one hour per treated zone. For the first few days, the result will be darker than desired, but after a week, the definitive colour is attained.

As a result of the renewal of the cells, the colour may gradually fade after three to five years. One to two months after the initial application, the result will be checked and retouched, if necessary (these follow-ups are included in the price). Later, a small annual check-up is recommended to refreshen the colour. Completely without obligation! You are automatically notified when the time comes.

After the treatment, the eyes may swell slightly. This swelling goes down after 24 to 48 hours. Patients who have ever had herpes (“fever blisters”) on the lips are advised to take Zovirax or Zelitrex pills as a preventive measure.

Permanent make-up and tattoos have a lot in common.

In both techniques a pigment is introduced into the skin using a needle. With permanent make-up, as well as with tattoos, the pigmentation can be characterised as permanent.

But there are also differences.

Generally speaking, tattoos are applied deeper in the skin than permanent make-up. The pigment from permanent make-up should ideally be applied to the upper layer of the dermis, just under the epidermis. Tattoos are usually much deeper than that.

A good tattoo is generally applied to the hypodermis.  The tattoo pigment is located between the fat cells in the skin. Because tattoos are applied more deeply, a tattoo remains in place much better after a treatment than permanent make-up does.

On the face, pigments may not be introduced as deeply due to the fine capillaries and nerve fibres there. With permanent make-up, a pigment is introduced into the skin. If permanent make-up is applied correctly, the pigment will end up just under the epidermis in the upper layer of the dermis.

All of the pigment that is applied to the epidermis will only remain in the skin for several days. The epidermis is continually renewing itself. Pigmentation in this skin layer is not permanent. On the other hand, the pigment may also not be applied too deeply. The more layers of skin on top of the pigmentation, the greater the colour will deviate from the pigment that was applied. Pigmentations that are placed too deep often become greyer, duller or faded.

That is why it is important to know that you have come to a ¨Master Permanent Make-up Artist¨ for your permanent make-up and not to a person who is accustomed to applying tattoos. In Belgium, tattoos and permanent make-up fall under the same statutory category. This increases the chances that you will end up with someone who is familiar with applying tattoos but who is not specialised in permanent make-up.

Also be careful with places that offer everything—nails, beauty salons who provide a wide array of services, hair salons, etc.—unless these places have hired someone professional, a Master Permanent Make-up Artist, to perform this handiwork in a professional manner. In other words, you need an expert! You really can’t be an expert in everything.

So choose a Master Permanent Make-up Artist who is exclusively specialised and has completed a certified course in the application of permanent make-up.

In the field of permanent make-up, the term ‘Master’ indicates an expert and the term ‘Artist’ indicates the artistic sensibilities that the person must have to successfully apply perfect permanent make-up that is aesthetically attuned to the shape of your face and in the right tones.

By selecting a Master Permanent Make-up Artist, you avoid the risk of your pigments fading to grey, dulling or even transforming into a reddish colour. With permanent make-up, you need the initial application and between one and three follow-up applications in order to obtain the perfect result.

That is another reason why the prices for permanent make-up cannot be set (too) low. If you choose inexpensive permanent make-up, you are guaranteed to be given a tattoo technique with tattoo pigments instead of true permanent make-up. Forget about trying to find an eyeliner treatment for 75 euros or getting your eyebrows done for 150 euros. Opting for offers like these means you will be choosing poor quality with a guarantee of grey or red discolouration of your eyeliner or eyebrows. This sounds harsh, but it is the truth—the truth you must take into account.

Normal target prices range between 175 and 250 euros for a high-quality eyeliner and between 300 and 550 euros for eyebrows. This price includes the initial application and all follow-ups until the perfect result is achieved.  These prices are evidence of the use of high-quality pigments and permanent make-up techniques as opposed to tattoo techniques, and of the fact that you are working with a Master Permanent Make-up Artist.

Otherwise, you are opting for a guarantee of problems instead of a guarantee of quality!

Tattoos are usually introduced into the subcutaneous layer of the skin (hypodermis). This layer is much deeper than the upper layer of the dermis. One of the reasons that a tattoo remains visible so much better than permanent make-up is that the pigment is introduced into a much deeper layer of the skin.

The other reason for the permanence of a tattoo has to do with the type of pigment used. The tattoo pigment is encapsulated between the yellow fat cells. This is why the black pigment often has a greenish tint. Pigments for permanent make-up are much more expensive due to their composition. I will discuss this in greater detail in another post.

On the face, the pigment may not be applied so deeply. There are many more muscles, nerves and blood vessels in your face than there are in the rest of your body. If you insert the pigment too deeply, the pigment may run.

The greatest difference between permanent make-up and tattoos is the purpose of their applications. A tattoo is a decoration and is there to be seen. Permanent make-up is intended to highlight the natural contours and is often at its most beautiful when it is not conspicuous.

The importance of extremely high-quality Permanent Make-up pigments

Quality comes at a price! This is widely known to be true for all types of products and services. And the same is true for permanent make-up pigments. That is why I have already explained in previous posts that inexpensive permanent make-up treatments are effectively a problem waiting to happen.

The cost of a good permanent make-up initial application/treatment depends on two very important elements.

First of all, the person who is applying the permanent make-up.

Performing permanent make-up treatments is a true craft: professional and artistic handiwork which is best left to an expert in all cases. In PMU jargon, we call this person a Master Permanent Make-up Artist.  This is a specialist who has been exclusively trained to perform permanent make-up treatments.

In order to obtain an optimal aesthetic result, a professional Master Degree training is truly a necessity. When you must have surgery, you choose a surgeon and not someone else, don’t you?

Well, to get a permanent make-up treatment on your face—whether with an eyeliner, at the eyebrows or for a lip contour—or for areola pigmentation, scalp pigmentation and scar camouflage treatments, to name just a few of the most important PMU disciplines, you should also choose a true expert in the field.

You will most probably pay a somewhat higher price, but in return you receive a guarantee of quality! After all, this is about your face of another part of your body, isn’t it?

Secondly, the quality of the permanent make-up pigments is key.

Permanent make-up pigments are different than the pigments used for tattoos. Besides that, there are enormous differences in the quality of these pigments. So it is logical that these differences also influence the price of the ultimate permanent make-up treatment.

¨In the Master training, we did sometimes joke about using cheap Chinese ink. However, it really is no joke. Chinese ink should only be used on porcelain vases, certainly not on your skin.¨

The pigments used for permanent make-up have a different particle size. Tattoo ink is also less expensive and has a much finer structure than permanent make-up pigments. The particle size of black tattoo ink is actually 50 times smaller than that of the black eyeliner pigment used for permanent make-up.

Fine pigment particles like those cannot be used on the face. The chance that this pigment will run when applying eyeliners, for example, or that your permanent make-up will fade to petrol grey or even to red is exceedingly great.

Most permanent make-up pigments are made up of inorganic iron oxide compounds. Your body has a complex iron metabolism. The colour of our blood, skin pigment (melanin), bile and faeces are all determined by iron oxide compounds. One of the reasons that permanent make-up fades is that our body breaks down iron oxides.

Tattoo pigments are usually made of carbon (black) or of organic pigments. Your body cannot break down most of these pigments and therefore they remain visible. Tattoo pigments are not suitable for permanent make-up applications on your face.
